What
is Part P?
From
January 1st 2005 all electrical work carried out in homes
and gardens in England and Wales should follow new rules set out in
the Building Regulations, often referred to as Part P. These rules
were introduced to reduce deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty
electrical installations and make it harder for ‘cowboy builders’ to
operate.
It is a criminal offence not to
comply with these requirements.
As most domestic electrical
work is now covered by the Building Regulations, the best way to
comply with these is to use an electrician who is registered with a
government approved
Competent Person
scheme. This means that they are qualified to carry out the work, they
can deal with all the new rules for you
and you will not have to pay building control charges.
A
certificate to confirm that the work follows the new rules is issued
on completion.
If you, or the person you employ to
carry out electrical work in your home doesn’t follow the new rules,
the electrical installation might not be safe and the work will not
have a certificate issued. This means there won’t be a record of the
work done and you may have difficulty selling your home without this.
Additionally your local authority's Building Control Department may
insist that you put right faulty work.
